Wacky Blues Professors

Artist

The four-piece band Prismojeni profesorji bluesa (Wacky Blues Professors) play a high-powered version of blues that tends to deviate into psychedelic rock or pulsating funk. The band’s specialty is the inclusion of distorted harmonica, whose sound elevates the already high-spirited and forceful music and transports the audiences into raptures of joy. When played live, the duration of a composition, and consequently a gig, usually depends on the band’s mood. Although a piece has a certain predetermined running time, its duration will be doubled and even tripled in size, provided the vibes are good, but never curtailed. While mostly performing self-penned music, the band’s playlist occasionally includes covers of foreign artists – their role models –, most notably the legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix and blues giants Freddie King and Muddy Waters.

Nesesari Kakalulu

Artist

Nesesari Kakalulu is a young collective of nine instrumentalists from the Slovenian Primorska region. The band gathered in 2016 with the aim of getting the crowds off their seats and onto the dancefloor with their rhythmically propulsive music, and generating positive vibrations through the sheer force of numbers occupying the stage. Initially brought together in the desire to honour the musical legacy of Fela Kuti, the band outgrew this first inspiration and developed their own sound, a music ritual re-invented in the spirit of the Sub-Saharan rhythms. Nesesari Kakalulu craft a weave of hypnotic bass lines in polyrhythmic juxtaposition with repetitive guitar riffs, djembe establishing a dialogue with drums, and winds venturing into improvised solo passages above the close-knit ensemble playing, while the seamless whole is spiced with the bravados of the vibrant percussion section. The band has recently introduced female vocals to their sets. The voices of an eight-member choir beautifully add to the blend of instrumental parts, which move between composed passages and the rapture of collective improvisation. Faced with the deluge of omnipresent electronic music, the band felt obliged to restore the dance ritual to its primal organic human form.
